Visit in Sharra Landfill
CRCD Center on 29th May, in the framework of REA Project “Reporting the Environment in Albania”, financed by the EU, organized a visit to Sharra Landfill with the participation of 5 journalists, as a continuity of the online course and the training on environmental investigative journalism in Albania.
The group of journalists were welcomed by the Director of Landfill, Z. Mirjan Kastrati and was accompanied by the technical team, engineers and environmental specialists who are working there.
Based on the unsafe environment in this area, journalists raised questions to understand the situation and the technical process of waste treatment for the Municipality of Tirana and 19 municipalities that benefit this service.
The landfill lies near a hundreds of hectares valley and is designed according to European standards from a foreign company at a cost of approximately 6 thousand euro. Sharra Landfill Project is scheduled to be operational for 5-7 years and now is the sixth year that is operating at a full capacity as a deposit for discharged waste. Daily tonnage of deposited waste is 650-700 tons and the cost for this quantity is 5 ALL/ton. Normally, it is planned that taxes collected at the Tirana Municipality for the provision of waste management can afford the operational costs for two other years. Then, it will be moved to a new site a few meters away.
Journalists that attended this visit will be engaged in writing investigative articles about this situation and these articles will be posted in website of REA project.
